Irapuato, Mexico is known as the “Strawberry Capital of Mexico,” and has a rich history intertwined with strawberry cultivation and industrial processing. The region’s ideal climate and fertile soil attracted early farmers who began experimenting with strawberry farming. This crop has emerged as a major agricultural product, capitalizing on increasing demand worldwide.
As Irapuato gained recognition for its high-quality strawberries, it began to establish itself as a key player in the global fruit market and became the world capital of strawberries. The strawberries from Irapuato are some of the best in the world due to higher brix levels than other regions.
Strawberries are high in demand due to a healthy nutrition profile.
Strawberries are rich in essential nutrients, especially vitamin C, manganese, and fiber. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant found in high amounts in strawberries, strengthens the immune system and promotes skin health. Manganese plays a vital role in bone health, while the fiber in strawberries aids digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Strawberries are also loaded with antioxidants and plant compounds like anthocyanins and ellagic acid. These compounds have anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce oxidative stress in the body, which is linked to chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. As a nutrient-rich food, they are in consistently high demand.
The 2024 Strawberry Crop in Irapuato, Mexico
Historically, the strawberry season in the region is from December to February. However, due to technological advances such as macro tunnels, improved irrigation methods, and the development of new varieties of strawberries, the crop season has been extended by several months. The current crop is having a slightly delayed start due to the amount of rain in the region. While too much rain affects the available volumes, it increases the quality of the fruit significantly. Once the colder weather begins the volumes and quality increase, especially with the use of the macro tunnels.
