Six Health Benefits of Tart Cherry Juice

Written and Published by BMT Foods, May 30, 2019

Tart cherries are typically consumed dried, frozen, juiced, or fresh. They are frequently found in jams and preserves and are used for cherry pies and other delicious cherry treats. Besides being delicious, they are also nutritious. At BMT Foods, we specialize in offering tart cherry juice (both NFC and concentrate.)

Many nutritionists agree tart cherries can boost one’s overall health. Below are six noteworthy health benefits consuming tart cherry juice provide.

1. It provides plenty of antioxidants, which improve overall health.

According to research published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), tart cherries contain high levels of antioxidants, which have been shown to help prevent the onset of stress-related illnesses and other health issues, including cardiovascular problems. Further research has also shown the antioxidants that appear in tart cherries, and other foods, to help ease the aging process and reduce inflammation.

2. It may boost recovery from cardio and weight-training exercises.

Studies have shown that tart cherries may also have anti-inflammatory properties. This delicious fruit contains flavonoids and other phytonutrients believed to help reduce inflammation within muscles and assist with muscle recovery, while helping minimize soreness throughout the body.

3. It could, naturally, help ease pain from arthritis.

One particular type of antioxidant found in tart cherries, anthocyanins, may help ease the pain and inflammation felt by those with arthritis. These compounds have similar properties to over-the-counter pain relievers including the three most well-known ones: ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. If you’re looking for a natural pain reliever, drinking tart cherry juice may help.

4. It aids in providing a better night’s sleep.

Believe it or not, the tart cherry juice you’re drinking – or not – could be affecting your sleep habits. Tart cherries contain melatonin, which is a hormone that works within the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, leading to a more-restful sleep. These benefits can be particularly useful in older adults, who struggle to meet doctors’ suggested sleep requirements.

5. It may help treat, or prevent, gout flare-ups.

Tart cherry juice may control whether you experience frequent gout flare-ups. Gout is caused by uric acid buildup, but tart cherry juice has been shown to reduce the body’s uric acid levels, as evidenced in a 2011 study published in the FASEB Journal, which showed that those who drank 8 ounces of tart cherry juice daily for four weeks saw serum uric acid levels reduced. Additionally, a 2012 study published in the Journal of Arthritis showed that cherry juice concentrate lowered uric acid levels in the body, with the study even showing cherry juice as potentially being more effective than pomegranate juice in doing so.

6. It may help prevent diabetes.

Though more studies need to be conducted in order for conclusive research and evidence to emerge, existing studies in animals have shown tart cherries to help lower overall body weight and reduce abdominal fat, both risk factors for type 2 diabetes. More studies are currently underway, but the results so far are promising.
