Mexican Raspberries & Strawberries: “Red Gold” Berries with Lots of Nutrients

Written and Published by BMT Foods, January 27, 2022

Raspberries in Mexico are sometimes referred to as “red gold” because they are one of the fastest growing fruits in the country and several different varieties are grown for the fresh and processing markets.

Raspberries are one of the healthiest fruits, being high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, manganese, and other nutrients. The fiber in raspberries aids with digestion and may reduce the chances of experiencing certain health conditions. Raspberries also contain anthocyanin pigments and carotenoids, both of which have exhibited potential health benefits around cardiovascular and circulatory function.

Strawberries, like raspberries, contain significant amounts of manganese, which aids brain and nerve function. Though lower in fiber, strawberries also offer important phytochemicals including anthocyanins and flavanols, which may lower health disease risks in certain individuals.

An overview of the Mexican Raspberry crop for 2022.

This year, the Mexican Raspberry crop began late due to heavy rains. The incoming volumes of fresh berries started low and have been increasing weekly. The growers expect that the crop will now be extended and will likely run through April.

The fresh market continues to take the majority of the fresh Raspberries and Strawberries, but BMT Foods is able to offer several different Frozen presentations packed in Drums as well as Pails.
